If you’ve made the decision to get more active, great job! You’re now on your way to better health, and a better quality of life. This week, we’re going to talk about whether you should hire a trainer or just join a gym to up your fitness game.
First off, hiring a trainer and joining a gym are two completely different things.
When you join a gym, you may be joining strictly for the classes, the equipment, the amenities (pool, hot tub, etc.), or any number of other facility-related reasons. These are all great uses of your money…if you go (ha!).
But, hiring a trainer is different. You’re paying someone for their time, their knowledge, and their ability to help you reach a very specific goal. Anyone can get a trainer - and your goal can be just about anything you need help with, even if it’s just accountability.
Now, depending on your ability to get the exercise you want done on your own or with group fitness classes and your budget, joining a gym may be the right option for you. After all, if you know your way around a gym, and you understand the equipment, you may not benefit from what a trainer can give you enough to justify the cost.
Which Do I Choose?
If you’re new to fitness, and don’t know where to start, then getting a personal trainer may be the best option for you. Not only are you paying for their expertise, but forking over your hard-earned money could be a great motivator to keeping you accountable.
If you have specific goals you want to accomplish, the trainer can help you design the right approach to reaching your goal (instead of copying something someone else is doing). Plus, a trainer will keep it fresh and lively, and push you out of your comfort zone - which may be hard to do training on your own.
Even though hiring a trainer may be costly, it’s an option worth exploring. But, if inclusive amenities are more your thing (and you know what you’re doing) then just joining a gym would be a smart move. You know yourself best.
If you’re serious about changing your health and have certain goals that a trainer would be worth helping you with, I would recommend scheduling a time to meet with a trainer. It could be the best investment for your health. Remember, you don’t have to be locked into anything if a trainer isn’t for you! Many gyms offer a free initial session with a trainer, too.
Find what works for you and be consistent.
Next Sunday, we’ll talk about my best and most effective nutrition tips when starting out.
