There are many health benefits of consuming gelatin. Its primary use however, is to aid in digestion. It can also be used in the treatment of intestinal disorders, including colitis and Crohn’s disease. This week, we’re going to talk about how gelatin’s uses go way beyond a bowl of Jell-O.

What Kind of Gelatin Do I Use?

The type of gelatin that will provide you with health benefits is NOT a box of Jell-O, though that is a great choice for a healthy dessert. You want grass-fed gelatin or collagen from pasture raised animals.

There are two different kinds of gelatin, one that gels when you use it and one that does not.

  • Beef Gelatin - This is the gelatin that you will want to buy to make homemade Jell-O, fruit snacks, and gummies.

  • Collagen Hydrolysate - This product is water-soluble, which means it can be added to cold or hot liquid and will NOT solidify.

**FYI: vegetarians and vegans, this isn’t for you.** Here is a good article on your options, though.

The Health Benefits of Gelatin

  • Gut Health - It can help to fill holes and damaged areas of the stomach lining as well as reduce inflammation. Because of its high concentration of the amino acid glycine, gelatin also increases the amount of gastric acid in the gut, which you need to break down and digest protein.

  • Bone Health - Did you know that your bones are made up of 90% collagen? We often hear that calcium is needed for strong healthy bones, but calcium is needed with collagen to make our bones healthy. Gelatin in bone broth or grass-fed powdered gelatin is the best way to get collagen.

  • Joint Health - The connective tissue in our joints is made up of collagen, therefore collagen is needed for healthy joints. Research has shown that athletes who took a collagen supplement experienced less pain in their joints and saw an increase in performance.

  • Skin and Hair Health - Collagen is what gives your skin its elasticity and helps to keep your skin wrinkle free. Gelatin is also anti-estrogenic and may help to balance hormones and break down fat that causes cellulite. Gelatin can also improve the strength and shine of your hair.

How Do I Use Gelatin?

You can add gelatin or collagen to smoothies, drinks, and soups. Ideally, you do this on a daily basis. Collagen hydrolysate and collagen peptides can be used in tea, coffee, bone broth, or water, as both will not gel. You can also make homemade Jell-O and fruit snacks from the beef gelatin and collagen proteins, as they will gel.

Next Sunday, we’ll talk about the hardest and most important element of my fitness formula - finding time and energy to be consistent in your workouts.
